The Kronos Story
Kia Ora,
my name is Sam and I am a qualified carpenter and the founder of Kronos Adventure Campervan Company Ltd.
My journey with camper vans started out of necessity in the South Island of New Zealand during my building apprenticeship in 2022. I built a basic platform in the back of my van so I could live on-site, travel, and snowboard. Living out of the back of that van taught me spatial design, condensation management, and material safety the hard way. Early mistakes with the wrong timbers and inadequate ventilation gave me direct insight into what a vehicle actually needs to endure full-time use.
After qualifying, I worked as an independent contractor building high-end architectural homes in the Coromandel. When looking to buy property, the financial return did not justify the cost. The numbers did not make sense for the life I wanted. Instead, I took residential building standards, premium timber, and precision joinery, and applied them to a long-wheelbase, high-roof platform to build a refined living space.
When establishing the business idea, the name Kronos became the core philosophy. Named after the Greek titan of time, the brand represents stepping off the conventional treadmill, rejecting the standard 9-to-5 grind, and reclaiming personal freedom. To carry that vision into the work, every custom van is individually designed and themed after figures in Greek mythology. This gives each build its own distinct identity, aesthetic, and functional character rather than treating conversions as mass-produced boxes.
After running both a rental fleet and custom build operation for two years, I made the strategic decision to cut the rental division completely. Managing a fleet was operationally heavy and tied me down to a fixed location, directly contradicting the freedom the company stood for. Exiting that model allowed me to focus entirely on high-spec timber fabrication and architectural design.
Today, Kronos delivers bespoke timber adventure vans engineered for long-term off-grid performance, built by a tradesman who knows both high-end construction that lasts and life on the road.
